CITY OF BEVERLY HILLS, CA
The City of Beverly Hills is know to be a very affluent city. Home to the rich and famous and also the shopping location of famous stores on Rodeo Drive. August 3, 1769 Gaspar de Portola was one of the first visitors to the area in what is now known as Beverly Hills. The first settlers were Maria Rita de Valdez and her husband in 1828. Their property was named Rancho Rodeo de las Aguas. In 1888 the land now Beverly Hills was farming land. Charles Denker and Henry Hammel owned the land and farmed Lima Beans. This ranch was later bought by a large oil company though they did not find enough oil to make a profit. So they decided to reorganized the land and came up with the Rodeo Land and Water Company and named the property Beverly Hills. The city is said to be named after a farm in Massachusetts and also because of the hills in the surrounding area. In 1912 the First Hotel called The Beverly Hills Hotel was built. Burton Green built the hotel in order to draw more people to the area and get them to purchase land. In 1914 there were enough people living in the area the city was able to become independent. The first people to build a Mansion in this city was Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford who bought land on Summit Drive. This made many more people want to build houses on this land.
