Glendale was named 3rd largest in LA. Due mainly to its population of 191,719. Glendale has an extensive Armenian Community.  The land that  is now Glendale is very rich in history. It was mainly settled by the Tongva people. These natives were much later named missionaries Gabrielenos. Governor Diego de Borica who owned Rancho San Rafael gave the land to Jose Maria Verdugo.

 

De Borica mainly used the land for farming and to feed cattle. Many years later Verdugos grandson built what is now one of the earliest known buildings. Famously called Verdugo Adobe.  the Brand Library located in Glendale was once a mansion called El Miradero. Known in English as the Look out. The estate was built by Leslie Coomb Brand.  Glendale is criss- crossed by quite a few earthquake faults. The largest are the Sierra Madre Fault, Hollywood Fault, San Gabriel Fault and San Andres Fault. Like most cities in the area Glendale climate is very much like the Mediterranean. The temperature in Glendale has been known to reach 118 degrees. The Temperature has also been known to dip as low as 16 degrees F. Glendale has a variety of weather with very warm summers and cold chilly winters. It is well know that Glendale has thunderstorms during the summer. There have also been monsoon like thunderstorms in the city. Santa  Ana winds blow through the area during the fall months. Glendale was one of the first cities to start a Bob's Big Boy Restaurant. Glendale is home to several large cooperation's like Nestle and International House of Pancakes. Walt Disney also has a large business office in the business park. Joined by the Muppet Studio, Marvel Studio and KABC-TV.  Glendale is home to the Americana at Brand a large outdoor shopping mall. One major attraction at this mall is the Pacific Theatres. Which seats 300 people in its 18 theatres.  Glendale has one of the largest Armenian community since the 20's. In 1970 the Armenian population grew immensely.
